My Review: *****

I was lucky enough to pick this book up at BEA and I for one was really taken by this dynamic, romantic, fantasy, historical Y/A series. It was a unique combination that whispered the richness of a great fantasy read. If you have an opportunity to pick up this book don’t miss it! The author literally takes you to another world that I think she is directly connected too, full of magic, beauty, adventure and suspense.
The romance between the main character, a sixteen year old girl and her immortal, nearly sizzles off the page as you learn that her eternal love has returned as he once promised to help her fulfill her destiny. Vivienne Le Faye is no ordinary girl, burdened with the gift of foresight, her grandmother meticulously raises her to cope with a family CURSE, which Vivienne knows little or nothing about. Her grandmother also insists that Vivienne learns how to defend herself with Kung Fu, which she becomes an expert in. Then her Gran proceeds to prepare her for a lonely and dangerous future, by teaching her about ancient religions, magic, ghosts and the paranormal. Over time Vivienne learns that there are other powers shadowing her awareness too.
After her Grandmother dies, the strange dreams begin. And Vivienne who is now the last descendent of the family line is charged with the task of protecting the family’s famed treasure, an ancient Ruby Amulet set in a Celtic knot of silver and gold. It is with this amulet that the Portal of Mists eventually opens, allowing her passage into a world of wizardry and magic, along with her unwavering belief that the boy with the golden eyes appearing in her dreams is real.
What I loved about the story was the pace and how the two worlds collided together. I couldn’t put this book down. I was also fascinated by how this touching love relationship developed, amid the conflicts and growing suspense of the action. There is no self -centered young woman here, wasting away her time, worried about her boyfriend but one who willing to travel a heroic journey filled with self sacrifice and destiny.
In the Other World, I found the fantasy realms absorbing and highly creative with characters that resonated with truth. There were many characters that you could be taken with, along with races and creatures that came alive on the page.
What I also admired was that the magic and spell casting seemed steeped in real magic based on Myth. Also the antagonist, the Master of the Souls, proves to be a terrifying nemesis where you learn about the fate of earth-bound ghosts. My advice, don’t miss this exceptional new Y/A series. Personally, I can’t wait for the next book . Since I’ve read it ,I can’t get it back from my kids and their friends who are standing in line ready to devour the next series that fits into the ”Twilight, “Harry Potter”, “Lord of the Rings” scenario.
